The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is a social intervention program where residents can access free health care. The premium is heavily subsidized and exemption is provided for the poorest, yet some residents are least enrolled in the scheme. Cost of premium is the main barrier to NHIS registration.
Miss Cassandra Williams, upon completion of her 3 weeks medical internship at Abokobi Health Centre, paid for 75 pupils of Abokobi Junior High School to be enrolled in the NHIS scheme. She embarked on this project when a twelve-year-old boy after undergoing treatment for a cut under his right eye could not afford cost of treatment. Miss Williams quickly paid for the boy’s medical bills and notified management of iLeap of her intentions to voluntarily sponsor 75 pupils.
NHIS Regional Office, Accra was notified and on Monday, 16th October, 2023 the registration exercise took off. Mr Mensah, Assistant Headmaster of the school thanked Miss Williams and iLeap for such act of kindness.
